I loved Jennifer Garner's quote recently when asked for her beauty tips.
The Hollywood actress, who lives in amongst a bubble of celebrity obsessions, told fans to stop looking in the mirror as much - pointing out that we all spend so much more time looking at ourselves than we ever did.
And it's true!!
The advent of Social Media means that when we're not posting images of ourselves for all to see, we're scrolling over endless images of other people and their so-called perfect lives.
But whenever I think of beautiful faces, I always think of sparky eyes and big smiles. A cheeky sense of humour, or a fighting spirit. An honesty and ability to relax enough to allow yourself to be yourself. I think of pools of empathy and emotion. None of which can be created with make-up or filters - but instead comes straight from the soul itself.
Garner also reminded us that there is so much more we could be doing with our time than obsessing over our looks, telling fans -
"Look in the mirror less, obsess less, and look at the rest of the world to see what you could be using your time for instead. We all look at our faces more than people used to, and it doesn't do you any good."
Fill your eyes with a passion and love for something or someone. Fill them with a love for the world - an interest and hungry curiosity for other people and their lives.
All of which will make you beautiful and interesting to others.
For me, something which sums it up perfectly is the saying I've posted today, from F.Scott Fitzgerald.
SHE WAS BEAUTIFUL.
The American novelist and screenwriter, who died just over 80 years ago, got it right when he said looks are just temporary.
Because they are.
But what always - ALWAYS - shines through is your spirit.
My favourite line of his is this one - "She was beautiful for the sparkle in her eyes when she talked about something she loved."
I identify with this a lot, having worked as a Journalist and within the media, interviewing a lot of people. I always notice people's eyes, and how sparkly and engaged they are. You can see intelligence in people's eyes too, I think - something about the strength and directness of their gaze.
So knowing that whatever is within you, will always shine through - get yourself out there. Go make your spirit beautiful!
